The Village Bicycle Project(Ongoing)
The Village Bicycle Project
Pet projects. Groups, prompts, contests, news serials. We all have them, whether it be one, or two, or ten if we've got a premium membership and a largesse of time. We start them for various reasons: to make a change for the better, to provide an opportunity that wasn't there before, or simply to make our mark on this wide and diverse community. Of course, it wasn't always like this. When I was first kicking around deviantART, News was still in beta (heck, beta-testing was still in beta) and Groups were nothing more than a glint in the ninja milkman's eye. What few projects there were were run out of the forums, individual journals or dedicated accounts, while the vast majority of contests came directly from the Gallery Directors. But now, thanks to these new features, anyone can be a community volunteer. You might not get the hat or the tacit permission to fling poop or rend innocents with your dinosaur teeth, but you are a community volu

Operation Thank You Poop! - CLOSEDContest is closed! Thank you for all the wonderful participation!:thumb284037599:
If you forgot, you can still send your note to inknalcohol as long as you've already flung poop at the targets.
Give us a couple days to sort out the results and expect a post on Tuesday at the latest.

Community Volunteers put in loads of time and effort to support the literature community on deviantART. They promote happenings, host contests and events, and search tirelessly for Daily Deviations to feature. That's just to name a few and there are plenty of other job requirements they fulfill!
They're also volunteers. As in they're not paid for all their excellent work! Not even a dime.
Operation TYP is all about repaying those efforts! We want you to show all your appreciation by leaving a lovely thank you message for our Community Volunteers! But you cannot simply say, 'Thank you!' It's not devious enough! You must giv

DEADLINE EXTENSION. So many of you are still hard at work on your submissions, so there will be a one week extension. Pieces are now due on March 4 at 12 AM PST
Welcome to the launch contest of Anthropology-of-Self. This group’s goal is to craft prompts and contests that help you investigate your world as it truly is and in all the ways it could have been. We hope to create a place where fiction, nonfiction and poetry can all mingle happily together while creating weird, wonderful stories.
For this contest, we ask you to go back to your beginning moments as a writer, that first time you chose to place a pen to paper and change the world around you. Your mission is simple:

Anniversary ContesttheWrittenRevolution is now two years old! As a tribute to how far we've come and to kick-off our future decades as an active and radical center for young writers, we're hosting our BIGGEST CONTEST YET.(Ends Mar. 3)
At some point in the future, we plan on becoming an independent, not-for-profit online writing website, a place where members can share their written work in an artistic fashion, as well as give and receive critique to help them improve their abilities. An aspect of that organization that we are rather enamoured with is publishing compilations of our members' best pieces.
Here's where it starts: we've decided to put together an eBook of the thirty best entries to this contest.
Maybe you're not that impressed, you're thinking, "It's just an eBook, no big deal." We get that. But this is just the beginning. We have to start somewhere, right?

We have prepared five themes and ten vignettes for you to choose from. You may use any of these to

Modernising Myths Contest: CLOSED!The transliterations Modernising Myths contest has officially closed! Despite a few hairy moments near the outset, and by hairy I mean positively hirsute, we finished with a heaving sack of modernised myths drawn from Greece to Japan to Easter Island. In fact, said sack wound up being nearly twice the size of our last contest's haul! It may take us a little longer to complete our deliberations with so many wonderful entries to work through, but we're ready to go and aiming to have the results up by March 5th. In the meantime, why not comment on a few of the entries yourself?Winter 2011 Contest (clickable link)

CritiqueCritique
An Expose-Lit Guide.
Why does everyone want critique? Because they (we!) want to take our writing to a new level. Feedback is the most effective way.
So, you want feedback but you're not sure what's the best way to get about it. Or maybe you want to maximise your chances. There are many avenues to explore....
Looking for Critique?
If you're looking for groups, choose those which are active, have a clear purpose, and are well-managed (organized, have rules, etc.)
To receive feedback, give feedback: tested and approved. It works for quality comments as well.
Contest prizes increasingly include critiques, so take part in them.
Keep yourself updated (and watch notable deviants) so that you can participate in activities, forums, chats and more. This allows you to network, to talk to people whose opinion you respect.
You may wish to actively seek exposur
Breaking in to Lit!Introduction
Literature has long been considered one of the closest knit communities on deviantART. As a result, some people find it difficult to "break in" to the Lit crowd. There are rumors of elitism, difficulty in getting exposure, and lack-luster appreciation for the incredible work that goes into writing a good piece of prose or a well structured poem.
If you look at a painting you can see amazing detail, great use of color, and the importance of the subject immediately. You know it came from the artist's imagination and that he or she had to spend hours translating that to a canvas. The tangibility of the work is right in front of you. With writing, it is not quite the same. The effort the author puts into the work can only be appreciated if readers put in their own effort to read the work. The gratification is not instant, which is one reason the lit community is so close knit.
Those who do have large followings often also comment and read quite a lot of work h

Time is indifferent, and inevitable.
This was written 12 years ago. Please now consider it his epitaph.
Time flies... away.
I finished a poem yesterday, for the children's book I've been working on since forever. I knew it was the first one I'd written in a while. But when I went to add it to the folder, I got quite the shock. Has it really been seven years? :o
I accidentally created a meme.

 Those who know me, know how much I love a good wordplay. On my Facebook wall one year ago, I'd put up a pic of me standing on my right leg, with the caption that I wanted to start off 2018 on the right foot. So for the end of the year, I wanted to do something equally goofy.
At first I was just going to record myself singing falsetto at 11:59 p.m., with the message that I wanted to end the year on a high note. But a bout of hoarseness earlier in the day put the kibosh on that idea. So as an alternative, I googled for a piece of clip art, cleaned it up a bit, an
Today I am 50.
Even as I type that, it just looks so wrong. I don't feel 50... except first thing in the morning. I don't yet look 50, or at least that's what most people are nice enough to tell me. But my birth certificate doesn't lie — unless my parents were a lot better at keeping secrets than I've given them credit for. :paranoid:
:bulletred: I remember looking up at my brother and sister's cribs, and thinking about how I was free and they were still trapped. I was three, and it's the earliest clear memory I have.
:bulletorange: I remember the first poem I ever wrote. "Time flies quickly, time flies fast. Before you know it, the present is the p
